1. TEACHERS’ DOMAIN TRANSITION TO PBS LEARNINGMEDIA™

PBS has launched an updated version of PBS LearningMedia, a high quality, easily accessible, and freely available classroom resource portal for PK-12 educators.

Educators who currently use Teachers’ Domain should note that PBS LearningMedia serves as a replacement for Teachers’ Domain, and that Teachers’ Domain will go away at the end of the current school year (Summer 2013). Individual account information and folders will be automatically migrated during the transition, but educators must register with PBS LearningMedia in order to retain their folders. All of the content existing in Teachers’ Domain remains available in PBS LearningMedia; the system also includes many new features such as the integration of State Standards.

Learn more by watching this PBS LearningMedia video (featuring our very own Climate Wisconsin) or by following the link to PBS LearningMedia on the Wisconsin Media Lab site (http://wimedialab.org/). There is also a link on Teachers’ Domain site (http://www.teachersdomain.org/lm_transition.html) that notes the migration and has a link to the details.

2. NOMINATIONS NOW ACCEPTED FOR 2013 GOVERNOR’S ARCHIVES AWARDS

The Wisconsin Historical Records Advisory Board, in partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society, is seeking nominations for the 2013 Governor’s Archives Awards. Presented each October, the awards recognize individuals, groups, and institutions which have completed exceptional work in preserving and presenting Wisconsin’s documentary heritage. Detailed information about the awards and the nomination process is available at
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/highlights/archives/2013/03/2013awards.asp.

Applications are due April 1, 2013, and award winners will be notified by July 15, 2013. Any questions regarding the application process can be directed to Simone Munson at simone.munson@wisconsinhistory.org or 608-264-6470.

3. VIDEO GAME DESIGN IS MORE THAN WRITING CODE

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is announcing a free webinar for library staff to explain how to involve youth in video game design and encourage entries in the 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge. IMLS is a National Community Sponsor of the Challenge, a multiyear competition inspired by President Obama’s Educate to Innovate Campaign.

Webinar Details:
Game Design Foundations for Libraries – March 27th, 3:00-4:00 pm EST
https://imls.megameeting.com/?page=guest&conid=Game_Design_Foundations_Libraries
To participate, call: 1-866-299-7945
When prompted, enter: 9485763

The webinar will provide a framework for workshops, found at http://stemchallenge.org/mentors/game-design-workshops/, that library professionals can present to youth at their institutions. The webinar will cover the foundations of game design and how it can be incorporated into a library learning environment. Participants will learn how game design can be effective in teaching core 21st century skills, such as systems thinking, problem solving, and critical thinking. The workshop framework provides engaging, hands-on, physical, and digital design activities that use free online game design tools. The webinar will also highlight the requirements for the 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge, which is accepting entries through April 24, 2013.

5. EXAMPLES OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY WORK IN COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION SOUGHT

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is partnering with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to create a best practice resource related to Comprehensive Community Revitalization. Libraries and museums engaged in comprehensive community revitalization initiatives are encouraged to report their projects to the IMLS and LISC by March 31, 2013. Case examples should illustrate efforts that foster community revitalization, involve collaborations with community-based groups, and are sustained over time.

The partnership will present its findings online through LISC’s Institute for Comprehensive Community Development. The effort also aims to create relationships between libraries and museums and community leaders through webinars, a convening in Washington, D.C., and the development of a policy report.

IMLS and LISC will analyze the case material and report back through a "promising practices" report to be published later this year, describing the most successful community revitalization collaborations involving museums or libraries.

LISC is the country’s largest community development intermediary and has been supporting comprehensive community change for ten years. It backs community partnerships in 107 neighborhoods in 30 cities and in many rural areas nationwide to revitalize low-income communities. Many partnerships have resulted in quality-of-life plans with noteworthy arts, cultural, and educational strategies to improve public safety, promote health, and build household income and assets.

A complete list of criteria is available on the IMLS website. If you have examples in mind, please send a brief note to Lesley Lundgren of LISC (llundgren@lisc.org) by March 31.
