2. WISCONSIN SCHOOLS EARN ACCOLADES FOR DIGITAL LEARNING DAY PARTICIPATION

Wisconsin schools won a shout out by Gov. Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia during the February 6 National Town Hall webinar to commemorate Digital Learning Day.

According to Sara Hall, Director of Digital Learning Policy for Alliance for Excellent Education (the national sponsor of Digital Learning Day), Wisconsin won the shout out for the following reasons:
  • Percentage growth in sign-ups from last year
  • Creativity in the program design.
  • Depth and breadth of the celebrations, activities, and programs.

3. WEBINAR: FRESH PRACTICES FOR YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIANS

Your youth services department might be a well-oiled machine of systematic displays and story times, but how often do you look at WHY you do what you do? Sometimes you need to reinvent the wheel and break the mold. Hear from three youth services experts in the state on ways to think of yourself as an educator (versus entertainer), literacy enthusiast (versus craft expert), and life changer (versus summer library soldier).

Join hosts Tessa Michaelson Schmidt, DPI Library Consultant; Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System Youth Services and Outreach Coordinator; Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library (Janesville) Head of Youth Services; Marge Loch-Wouters, LaCrosse Public Library Head of Youth Services on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

4. YALSA RECOGNIZES WISCONSIN LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Shannon Crawford Barniskis, Director of the Lomira QuadGraphics Public Library in Lomira was one of four Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Writing Award winners. Her article, "Graffiti, Poetry, Dance: How Public Library Art Programs Affect Teens," Vol. 2, Number 3 (Fall), appeared in The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults (http://bit.ly/ZLVFmg). A jury of library administrators and professors recognize well-written writing contributions from YALSA members to a library division's journals that are timely, original, and relevant to YALSA members. Shannon will be awarded a plaque and $500 at YALSA's Membership Meeting during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago this summer. 5. CALLING ALL YOUTH GAMERS: CONTEST FOR ORIGINAL VIDEO GAMES NOW OPEN

The annual National STEM Video Game Challenge, presented by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and E-Line Media opens this week for student submissions of original video games and game designs. The National STEM Video Game Challenge, now in its third year, was inspired by President Obama's "Educate to Innovate Campaign," an initiative promoting science, technology, engineering, and math education.

"For museums and libraries, participation in the STEM Video Challenge is a natural fit," said IMLS director Susan Hildreth. "The Challenge ties into our goal to support libraries and museums that make a difference on issues of national concern. Our institutions have deep experience providing opportunities for teens to gain 21st century skills and participating in the STEM Video Challenge encourages creativity, systems thinking and problem solving."

The 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge is accepting entries from U.S. students in grades five through twelve, through April 24, 2013. Students can enter as individuals or in teams of up to four students. Entries can be created using any game-making platform such as Gamestar Mechanic, Microsoft's Kodu, GameMaker, Scratch, or a written game design concept document.

Each individual winner and each member of a winning team will receive an AMD-powered laptop computer that will include game design and educational software. The winners' sponsoring school or an organization of their choice will receive a cash prize of $2000.

6. NOMINATE KEYNOTE PRESENTERS FOR LIBRARY 2.013 CONFERENCE

Last year, individuals and organizations were invited to nominate keynote speakers to lead the global conversation about the future of libraries during the Library 2.012 Worldwide Virtual Conference. Thanks to that input, last year's conference featured a dynamic lineup of keynote presenters including Moreno Barros from Brazil, Kathryn Greenhill from Australia, David Weinberger from the United States, Laura Malita from Romania, and many other renowned library and information science leaders from around the world.

In preparation for the Library 2.013 Worldwide Virtual Conference, scheduled for October 18-19, 2013, nominations for speakers are once again being accepted. Who has inspired you lately? Have you heard a talk that gave you an "aha moment"? As you think about who you want to nominate, please keep in mind that keynote presenters do not have to speak English or travel for this conference. The Library 2.013 conference will be held in multiple languages and time zones entirely online. To make nominations, please fill out and submit the online keynote speaker nomination form. All nominations must be received by March 31, 2013. Self-nominations will also be accepted.

The Library 2.013 Worldwide Virtual Conference is a participatory conference open to the public. In addition to keynote speakers, the conference thrives on the research and knowledge shared by the library and information science community. Everyone is invited to submit a presentation proposal - the official call for proposals will go out in early April 2013. This year, the virtual conference will cover eight subject strands, although presentations do not have to fit into the conference strands to be considered.

Library 2.013 Conference Strands

STRAND 1: Digital Services, Preservation, and Access
STRAND 2: Emerging Technologies and Trends
STRAND 3: Learning Commons (for school libraries and/or academic libraries)
