2. I SAY HELLO: INTRODUCING THE WISCONSIN LIBRARIES BLOG

As times and technology continue to change, so do methods of communicating with the Wisconsin library community and its supporters. Beginning December 1, the Division for Libraries and Technology (DLT) will introduce a new communications tool – the Wisconsin Libraries blog. The Wisconsin Libraries blog will feature the same types of news and information currently presented in the Channel Weekly e-newsletter, but in a more dynamic, online capacity.

Similar to Channel Weekly, readers can subscribe to receive email notifications about new posts on the Wisconsin Libraries blog. The Wisconsin Libraries blog will offer richer and more visual content. In addition, content will be tagged and searchable, allowing readers easier access to posts on topics of need or interest. More information about the Wisconsin Libraries blog and how to subscribe will be shared in the coming weeks via Channel Weekly and the wispublib email list serv.

With the introduction of the blog, the DLT will "sunset" the Channel Weekly e-newsletter. The final issue of Channel Weekly will be published on December 18, 2014. As a Channel Weekly subscriber, you will continue to receive the newsletter during the months of November and December. Channel Weekly archives will be accessible indefinitely on the DPI website: http://channel.dpi.wi.gov/.

3. COLAND WORK GROUP TO HOLD LISTENING SESSIONS, WEBINAR

The Wisconsin Council on Library and Network Development (COLAND) work group charged with developing the Strategic Vision for Library Systems in the 21st Century has completed the first draft of recommendations. With the encouragement of Superintendent Tony Evers, COLAND appointed a work group to develop a strategic vision for library systems and recommend actions that will move Wisconsin toward the desired future state. By using previous studies, data and reports from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), as well as an online feedback form to obtain more input from librarians in the process, the subcommittee has completed a draft vision to be reviewed by members of COLAND and the System and Resource Library Administrators' Association of Wisconsin (SRLAAW), and then presented to the library community at large for feedback.

Next week at the Wisconsin Library Association's (WLA) Annual Conference at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, work group members will present a draft copy of the vision and accept feedback in two sessions on Thursday, November 6, at 7:30 a.m. (Mangrove Room) and 2:45 p.m.(Suite C & D).

For those not able to attend the WLA COLAND Forum: A Strategic Vision of Library Systems in the 21st Century, the Strategic Work Group Chair Kathy Pletcher and work group member Jim Trojanowski will conduct a webinar on November 10 at 1 p.m. to go over the recommendations and receive feedback from the library community. The link for the webinar is at https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/175146568. The COLAND work group will meet following the webinar to review the summary of findings. For more information please contact Kathy Pletcher at kpletcher@gmail.com and Jim Trojanowski at jtrojanowski@nwls.lib.wi.us.

4. BIG READ GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE

The Big Read is accepting applications from non-profit organizations to develop community-wide reading programs between September 2015 and June 2016. The Big Read is a national program designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage reading for pleasure and enrichment.

Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read receive a grant, educational and promotional materials, and access to online training resources and opportunities. Approximately 75 organizations from across the country will be selected.

To review the Guidelines and Application instructions, visit http://www.neabigread.org/application_process.php.

Application deadline is January 28, 2015 by 4:00 p.m. CST.

Follow @NEABigRead on Twitter for all the latest info and news.

A new title has been added to The Big Read catalog this year: Brother, I'm Dying by Edwidge Danticat. Edwidge Danticat grew up in Haiti, raised by her uncle, then moved to the United States with parents and siblings she hardly knew. This poignant memoir explores the contrasting lives of her uncle in Haiti and her father in America, and delves deep into themes of family, home, and tradition.
