In 2014, the Department of Administration’s (DOA) TEACH program upgraded over 350 Wisconsin public libraries to fiber connections, providing 10 Mbps at just $100/month. Still, only 8.5% of libraries in Wisconsin have connections over 10Mbps. The project, especially the fiber installations, is a great start in addressing the many needs people have for public library Internet access. It is essential that we continue working to address library bandwidth needs. Join the three speakers as they review the Library Fiber Project and the importance this project has in preparing for the future bandwidth needs of our libraries.

2. coland welcomes feedback on library system vision

As reported in last week’s issue of Channel Weekly, the Wisconsin Council on Library and Network Development (COLAND) has appointed a work group to develop a strategic vision for public library systems in the 21st century. As part of this process, COLAND is soliciting feedback from the library community. In order to provide opportunities for feedback from as many people as possible, COLAND will hold two listening sessions on Thursday, November 6, during the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) conference at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells. The sessions, COLAND Forum: A Strategic Vision for Library Systems in the 21st Century, are scheduled for 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:45 until 3:30 p.m. Locations for the forums will be announced prior to the conference.

If you have questions about the progress of the Strategic Visioning for Library Systems in the 21st Century, contact Kathy Pletcher at pletchek@uwgb.edu and/or visit the COLAND website at http://dpi.wi.gov/coland. If you have questions about COLAND or its role in the visioning process, contact Nita Burke, COLAND Chair, at burken58@gmail.com. The work group’s recommendations will be presented for approval by COLAND at the next regularly-scheduled COLAND meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2014, at the Columbus Public Library.

3. CLOSING: WISCONSIN’S CHILDREN’S PERFORMER DIRECTORY

After nearly 15 years, the Wisconsin Children's Performer Directory is closing. The Department of Public Instruction’s Public Library Development team no longer has the budget or staff resources to support the Directory, which has also come to pose some liability issues for the agency. The existing web pages linked to http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_performers will be kept online through the 2015 Wisconsin Summer Library Program, but no revisions or additions will be made.

Jamie McCanless, Public Library Data and Finance Coordinator, continues to maintain a directory of Wisconsin public libraries and regional library systems that performers can use to contact libraries. It is available online as an Excel file at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/xls/wipldir.xls and as a PDF file at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/pdf/wipldir.pdf. The PDF file is updated annually. The Excel file is updated annually and as needed during the year.

For a nostalgic look back, the "Internet Archive Wayback Machine" has archived a copy of the Directory from February 2001, shortly after it debuted. See it at http://tinyurl.com/WI-performers.
