1. ALA-OITP E-RATE MODERNIZATION WEBINAR (RECORDED)

The American Library Association Office for Information Technology Policy (ALA-OITP) fellow Bob Bocher, program director Larra Clark, and assistant director Marijke Visser discuss the changes in E-rate and how it affects libraries. Bob Bocher goes over the three main goals incorporated in the E-rate Modernization:

  1. Ensure that all libraries have affordable access to sufficient high-speed broadband
  2. Maximize cost-effectiveness of E-rate spending—focusing on broadband
  3. Make E-rate application and follow-up processes faster, simpler, more efficient

Along with these goals is discussion on the Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FNPRM) regarding E-rate Modernization.

The presenters also discuss network neutrality, the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) rural broadband experiments, FCC municipal broadband petitions, and the Digital Inclusion Survey findings.

2. TIP SHEETS AND VIDEO HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANCE OF LIBRARY READING PROGRAMS

The Public Library Development Team recently published three new resources concerning library reading programs. “Offering Library Reading Programs: Top Ten Tips for Librarians” and “Why library reading programs matter: 10 Tips for Parents & Caregivers” are highly visual information pieces that outline the benefits of library reading programs, such as summer reading programs and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten programs. In addition, a short video tutorial offers a glimpse at why both documents were created and how to use them at your library. You can access both documents and the video at the new Literacy Research webpage on the DPI website: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_literacy_research.

3. KNIGHT NEWS CHALLENGE: LIBRARIES
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has a blog called Knight News. This publication announced a challenge to libraries asking, “How might we leverage libraries as a platform to build more knowledgeable communities? … This is an open call for ideas. We view libraries as key for improving Americans’ ability to know about and to be involved with what takes place around them. The library has been a vital part of our communities for centuries—as keepers of public knowledge, spaces for human connection, educators for the next generations of learners. While habits are changing, those needs have not. We want to discover projects that help carry the values of libraries into the future.” $2.5 million is available to fund the best ideas that reimagine the role of libraries in the digital age, and winners will be announced early next year. Entries are being accepted until September 30, 2014 at 5 p.m. Knight News is hosting a virtual webinar from 12 to 1:00 p.m. on September 15. Participants can register for an online meeting to hear about the challenge (https://bluejeans.com/731675489/browser using ID 731675489), or participate via phone at 1-888-240-2560.
