1. FINAL 2013 WISCONSIN PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE DATA NOW ONLINE

Final 2013 Wisconsin Public Library Service Data is now available at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_dm-lib-stat. Library directors are asked to review their library's data and send any questions to libraryreport@dpi.wi.gov.

Wisconsin Public Library Service Trends 1990-2013 is also online at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/pdf/wiplservicetrends.pdf. This is a line chart of statewide totals for total circulation, library visits, interlibrary loans, state population, reference transactions, and program attendance.

Libraries and library systems can use the LibPAS online reporting tool to produce their own data comparisons:

  • Log in to Counting Opinions at https://wi.countingopinions.com with the director's username and password. (The login page has a password reminder link.)
  • At the bottom of the main page, click the light blue Library Reports button.
  • In the Manage Reports window, the Local > Report Templates tab has predefined summary reports of data in a 10% range of the library.

Additional instructions for using LibPAS report templates are online at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/pdf/coreports.pdf.

2. WILS WORLD 2014

The WiLS World Conference 2014 took place at the Pyle Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on July 29-30, 2014. It was the first WiLS World Conference since the WiLS organization has restructured (for more information on this see here http://www.wils.org/2014/08/06/wils-2014-annual-report/), and this year's conference focused more on strategic planning and collaboration.

Presentations varied by topic. The opening keynote by Daniel W. Rasmus, a self declared "anti-futurist" and author, discussed the possible future of libraries, what to look at in order to properly assess the future, and how to do effective strategic planning. The final day's keynote was a panel discussion with Greg Mickells, Director, Madison Public Library; Lisa Viezbicke, Director, Morse Library, Beloit College; and Patrick Wilkinson, Director, Forrest R. Polk Library, UW-Oshkosh. The panel discussed how each of them tackled big changes in their libraries, from staff restructuring to changing the mission and vision statements for the institution. Other presentations at the conference included how libraries can be involved with digital humanities, how to collaborate to get projects started and completed, how to foster creativity, and more.

Many of the WiLS World 2014 presentation slides are available here: http://www.wils.org/news-events/wilsevents/wilsworld-conference-2014/.
