1. LIBRARIES ENCOURAGED TO PROMOTE WORLD REFUGEE DAY

In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly established June 20 as World Refugee Day. Since then, people all over the world have celebrated World Refugee Day during June with events that honor the world's more than 15 million refugees and raise awareness about the struggles and contributions of refugees.

Wisconsin, which began resettling refugees in 1975, has celebrated World Refugee Day in recent years. The state is now home to over 75,000 refugees and former refugees primarily living in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Madison, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Wausau, Stevens Point, Appleton, Oshkosh, and Barron County. Recently-arrived populations include Burmese, Iraqi, Somali, Congolese, Sudanese, Bhutanese, and others.

Online resources about refugees worldwide can be found at www.unhcr.org. Information about refugees in Wisconsin may be found at: http://dcf.wisconsin.gov/refugee/day. A poster listing the refugee-related events taking place during June in Wisconsin may be found at: http://www.dcf.wisconsin.gov/refugee/day/pdf/statewide-poster.pdf).

Wisconsin libraries are encouraged to help promote understanding about our state’s refugees by displaying refugee-related books and other resources. A document listing books and films regarding the refugee experience may be found at: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/orr/refugee_films_and_books.pdf. In addition, the Wisconsin State Refugee Office recommends these resources that are especially pertinent to the populations we have in Wisconsin:

  • Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town by Warren St. John
  • Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai
  • The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family memoir by Kao Kalia Yang
  • Strength in What Remains: A Journey of Remembrance and Forgiveness by Tracy Kidder
  • The Good Braider by Terry Farish
  • Refugee Hotel (Voice of Witness) by Juliet LInderman & Gabriele Stabile

Films:

  • Welcome to Shelbyville (2010) directed by Kim A. Snyder (67 minutes) - On the eve of the 2008 election, the town of Shelbyville, Tennessee finds itself embroiled in a struggle to come to terms with a new wave of immigrants and grappling what it means to be American.
