1. USING WISEDASH TO UNDERSTAND YOUNG PATRONS AS STUDENTS

Customize your library's programs and services for children, teens, and families by discovering what's happening in the district, grade levels, and schools in your area. Explore data related to academic performance in reading and math as well as enrollment groups such as economic, disability, ELL, and migrant status. Find out how to capture data for use on applications and reports that require identification of library demographics.

Youth services librarians and public library directors are encouraged to attend this informative and instructive webinar about WISEdash Public Portal. WISEdash is a data portal that uses "dashboards," or visual collections of graphs and tables, to provide multi-year education data about Wisconsin schools. As a public reporting tool, WISEdash is used by districts, schools, parents, researchers, media, and other community members to view data published by Department of Public Instruction. Webinar participants will participate in a guided exploration to gain an overview of WISEdash as well as examine search techniques.

Date: Thursday, March 13, 2014 12:00-1:00pm
Presenters: DPI Division of Libraries & Technology staff Melissa Straw, Manager, Data Warehouse and Decision Support Team; Melanie McCalmont, Business Analyst, Data Warehouse and Decision Support Team, and Tessa Michaelson Schmidt, Youth and Special Services Consultant, Public Library Development Team.

2. DIGITAL LEARNING DAY: WISCONSIN TOPS WITH 436 REGISTERED ACTIVITIES

Last week, students at Wausau elementary schools connected with each other via Skype, and then had the job of asking each other "yes" or "no" questions to figure out what community and school their counterparts were sitting in. It took about ten minutes, according to WAOW television in Wausau.

It was a Digital Learning Day activity that provided an opportunity to practice not only technological but also collaborative skills, said Keshia Mashak, the district's instructional technology integration specialist, in the report.

That activity was just one of many activities Wisconsin schools and libraries registered with the national Digital Learning Day website as Wisconsin participated in the third annual event sponsored by the Alliance for Excellent Education.

Wisconsin was by far the top state in events registered with national Digital Learning Day. Thanks to the efforts of schools throughout Wisconsin, the state hosted a record-breaking number of events both in terms of the DPI records and also in the national Digital Learning Day listings (schools could report their plans to one or the other or both).

The DPI's own database registered 261 events, while the national records included 438 in Wisconsin. The runner-up states, North Carolina and Alabama, came in well behind, at 216 and 199. The DPI is keeping online, searchable records of the events from 2012, 2013 and 2014.

3. BADGERLINK RESOURCE OF THE WEEK

Celebrate Black History Month with BadgerLink! Did you know that the inventor of the traffic signal was African American? Garrett Morgan (1877-1963) is also known for inventing a breathing apparatus that aided firefighters. http://ow.ly/sxL1E
