3. WISCONSIN'S DIGITAL LEARNING DAY SET FOR FEBRUARY 5, 2014
Wisconsin's Digital Learning Day will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, in conjunction with the national event hosted by the Alliance for Excellent Education at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Wisconsin educators will share examples of how they are creating digital learning environments and learning opportunities in their classrooms, libraries, schools, and districts.
Through this work and by hosting a Digital Learning Day on February 5, 2014, Wisconsin strives to build momentum for a wave of innovation that changes policies, shifts attitudes, and supports wide-scale adoption of these promising instructional practices.
Digital Learning Day promotes the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a robust digital environment every day with the goal of success in college and a career. Common-sense and effective applications of digital learning should be fully integrated into all of America's schools, libraries, and homes to promote life-long learning and good citizenship.
Participation is easy and free! Wisconsin encourages all education stakeholders to:
- Add your voice and consider planning district level initiatives to encourage your technology leaders, principals, librarians, library directors, teachers, and school counselors to make plans to celebrate Digital Learning Day in their schools, libraries and classrooms.
- As a school, library, or district leader, we encourage you to host an event, announce a new technology initiative, or provide opportunities to encourage teacher involvement in Digital Learning Day.
- As a teacher, librarian, school, or district leader, plan an event and add it to the Digital Learning Day event map at http://digitallearningday.org/sign-in/create-an-event/.
Wisconsin will focus its efforts on three events:
- Collecting compelling stories showing how innovative digital instructional strategies have transformed student learning opportunities and outcomes in our schools, districts, and libraries. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) will collect these stories from around the state. Links to video versions of stories will be gathered and shared. Participation is voluntary and educators with positive stories to tell can provide information at http://tinyurl.com/widldtellstory.
- Implementing Google Communities (http://tinyurl.com/wetechcommunity) for members of the Wisconsin Educational Technology (WETECH) email list. DPI is beginning the transition from the current email lists to Google Communities to provide more personal, resource based and focused opportunities for collegial learning. The 2014 national Digital Learning Day provides an excellent opportunity to model digital collaborative learning for educational professionals.
- Collecting and sharing information on Digital Learning Day events in Wisconsin schools, districts and libraries. DPI will collect Digital Learning Day events and activities from classrooms, libraries, schools and districts and create a statewide list showing examples.
Similar celebrations are being held nationwide. See a national event and its related activities, and events hosted in all fifty states and DC.
The National Digital Learning Day agenda includes a "Digital Learning Fair" and "Making It Personal" kiosks featuring hands-on activities, lessons to demonstrate digital learning in action, and real-life stories of students and teachers who already realize the potential of creating digital learning environments.
The national event will feature district-level experts who have already successfully navigated the digital learning shift, ready to answer questions from educators across the country. Video footage from this national event will be available to all Digital Learning Day participants.
