1. PRELIMINARY 2012 WISCONSIN PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE DATA NOW AVAILABLE

Excel files of the following preliminary 2012 Wisconsin public library statistics are now online at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_dm-lib-stat.

  • State and System Level – Includes state totals and averages along with system-wide statistics in order by system.
  • County Level – Includes county-wide statistics in order by county.
  • Public Library Level – Includes statistics for all public libraries in the state in order by municipality.
  • Public Library Level by System and County – Includes statistics for every public library, county, and system in the state. Arrangement is alphabetical by system, then county, then by each library. County and system totals are also provided.

These statistics are based on information submitted on the 2012 Public Library Annual Reports. For the first time, the service data includes Uses of Downloadable Content (total uses of downloadable e-books, e-audio, and e-video). The preliminary data may be useful for planning and comparison purposes, as well as for preliminary budget preparation.

Library directors are asked to review their library's data and report errors or corrections to LibraryReport@dpi.wi.gov.

2. 2013 WISCONSIN PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTORY AVAILABLE

The 2013 Wisconsin Public Library Directory from the Department of Public Instruction’s Public Library Development Team is now available online in PDF and Excel formats at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_lib_dir. The directory is based on data compiled from the 2012 Public Library Annual Report and subsequent, ongoing updates. Library directors are asked to please review the information for their libraries and report any corrections to libraryreport@dpi.wi.gov.

The PDF version at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/pdf/wipldir.pdf contains a single combined "Directory of Public Libraries and Their Branches" listed by city, followed by an alphabetical index of library and branch names. The document also includes system and resource library directory information.

The Excel file at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/xls/wipldir.xls has three sheets containing information for all 384 public libraries and services, 82 branches, and the state's 17 regional library systems. This Excel file is useful as a merge source for mailing labels or form letters.

4. COOPERATIVE CHILDREN’S BOOK CENTER CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

Everyone is invited to join the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) on the evening of October 17, 2013, in a celebration of its 50 years of service with a 50th Anniversary Celebration Banquet at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison. For information about the banquet, including registration, visit http://education.wisc.edu/ccbc/50thbanquet.asp.

Following the banquet, the 2013 Charlotte Zolotow lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Monona Terrace Lecture Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. Leonard Marcus, noted children’s literature historian, will reflect on 50 years of children’s publishing in celebration of the CCBC’s 50th anniversary.

5. COLAND PROVIDES INFORMATION ON E-BOOK MARKETPLACE TOOLS

There are many changes in the e-book marketplace which affect all libraries and the Council on Library and Network Development (COLAND) wishes to alert the library community about a few readily accessible tools which may assist with decisions related to obtaining e-books.

Last year, American Libraries Association (ALA) President Maureen Sullivan appointed the ALA’s Digital Content and Libraries Working Group (DCLWG), which developed toolkits for buying ebooks, advocacy materials, and other informative and useful guides. The DCLWG website contains the links to these items at http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/ebooktoolkit.

At this year’s ALA conference held in June, Sullivan launched the "Authors for Library Ebooks" campaign, which encourages authors to sign on to a statement of shared values, to discuss the issue with their publishers, and raise awareness of their concerns through their websites, social media, and other communications channels.

For more information about the campaign and how to get involved, visit the Authors for LibraryEbooks website at http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/a4le.

COLAND is a gubernatorial-appointed council that works closely with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Wisconsin Legislature, and the Governor to ensure that all state citizens have access to library and information services. A list of the Council members can be found at http://dpi.wi.gov/coland/members.

6. University of Wisconsin Digital Collection’s Center (UWDCC) in the News

Melissa McLimans, Digital Services Librarian at the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center (UWDCC) and project manager for many Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA)-funded digitization projects, was featured in an article in the September 5, 2013, issue of the Wisconsin State Journal (http://tinyurl.com/mc5xxzv). During the past eight years, Melissa and her predecessor, Vicki Tobias, have worked with the Department of Public Instruction’s Division for Libraries and Technology staff to digitize many public library materials that can be found in the UWDCC’s State of Wisconsin collection. The State of Wisconsin collection (http://uwdc.library.wisc.edu/collections/WI) is a representative sample of unique or valuable material relating to the history of the state. The collection includes published and archival material digitized from a variety of formats including books, sound recordings, photos, maps, and more.
