1. Association of Rural AND Small Libraries (ARSL) scholarship winners

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's Public Library Development team received eleven (11) applications for a scholarship of up to $750 to attend the Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) conference in Omaha, Nebraska, September 26-28, 2013. Applicants all worked in libraries serving a population of less than 12,000 and agreed to participate in a webinar to share information and new ideas they plan to implement in their libraries. Four (4) persons were selected for the scholarships, which will help defray the cost of ARSL membership, conference registration, travel, hotel, and meals. The 2013 scholarship winners are: Jennifer Einwalter, Slinger Community Library; Megan Olson, Thomas St. Angelo Library in Cumberland; Amy Stormberg, Shell Lake Public Library, and Sue Vater Olsen, Scandinavia Public Library. Depending on availability of funding, the Department of Public Instruction hopes to offer scholarships for next year's ARSL conference.


2. WISCONSIN LIBRARIANS AND THE Affordable Care Act (ACA) WEBINAR

On Wednesday, August 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. CDT, Stephen Johnson from the Ebling Health Sciences Library at the University of Wisconsin, along with Terrie Howe and Tessa Michaelson Schmidt from the Public Library Development Team at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, will present an overview of the Affordable Care Act and how it relates to Wisconsin public libraries. Topics will include:
  • Basic health information and insurance terminology in the state
  • Affordable Care Act implementation in Wisconsin
  • Timeline for the implementation during the first year of the program
  • Who qualifies for the program
  • Who to contact for assistance
  • What the major websites are to seek more information

3. AUGUST EDITION OF YOUTH SERVICES SHOWCASE NOW AVAILABLE

The August edition of the Wisconsin Youth Services Showcase has been published and it is chockfull of creative programs and amazing experiences for young readers.

4. DIGITALLEARN.ORG PROJECT LAUNCHES

ThePublic Library Association's (PLA) new site, DigitalLearn.org, is an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant-funded project to create an online hub for digital literacy support and training. The site launched in June 2013 and is intended to build upon and foster the work of libraries and community organizations as they work to increase digital literacy across the nation. DigitalLearn.org is being undertaken in partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) as well as other national agencies, state libraries, public libraries, community organizations, and many others. Included in DigitalLearn.org is a collection of self-directed and basic tutorials for end-users to increase their familiarity with computers, and a community of practice for digital literacy trainers to share resources, tools and best practices. Libraries can also enroll in their digital teaching forum or volunteer to help develop new training modules for the site.


5. WISCONSIN DIGITAL ARCHIVES STATE DOCUMENT OF THE WEEK

Resources for Teachers in the Wisconsin Digital Archives, http://bit.ly/157gSd1 . State documents provide information about the activities, functions, and policies of government on a wide range of topics and current events. Many documents are designed to meet the needs of teachers in the classroom. Access primary sources and find activities and study guides that highlight state government in the Wisconsin Digital Archives.
