1. 2014 LSTA GRANT APPLICATION FORM NOW AVAILABLE

The 2014 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant application online form is now open on the LSTA web site: (http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_lsta). LSTA applications for six competitive and three of the four non-competitive grant categories are due by 4:30 p.m. on September 13, 2013. Competitive grant categories are: Digital Creation Technology, Digitization of Library Historical Material, Accessibility Projects, Early Literacy Projects, Literacy Projects, and Merging Integrated Library Systems. The non-competitive grant categories are Merging Public Library Systems, Public Library System Technology, Delivery, and Digital Content Buying Pool. The Digital Content Buying Pool application form will be made available to the public library systems at a later date.

2. scholarships available for 2013 Association for Rural AND Small Libraries Conference

There are four scholarships (grants) available to attend this year's Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) Conference (ARSL) in Omaha, Nebraska, from September 26-28, 2013. Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds totaling $750 per recipient will reimburse eligible costs such as conference registration, membership, travel, and lodging. It is up to the recipient to make all travel arrangements. The application is posted on the DPI’s Public Library Development website (http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld) under “Recent Updates” (http://tinyurl.com/ldak32r). The deadline to apply is July 15, 2013. A written evaluation must be completed by February 15, 2014.

Priority will be given to scholarship applicants who:

  • Work in a Wisconsin small or rural public library (less than 12,000 population)
  • Never have attended a previous ARSL Conference
  • Are willing to network and share information with WI colleagues
  • Agree to participate in a webinar to share what you learned with the library community
  • Attain the supervisor's approval for the application

3. JUNE EDITION OF WISCONSIN YOUTH SERVICES SHOWCASE NOW AVAILABLE

The June edition of the Wisconsin Youth Services Showcase is now available. Check out this month’s features:

4. PARTICIPANTS SELECTED FOR 2013 YOUTH SERVICES DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE

The following twenty-five participants have been selected for the inaugural Youth Services Development Institute, a professional development and networking opportunity for librarians who serve babies, children, and teens in small to medium public libraries in Wisconsin. The Institute targets librarians who have no graduate level education in librarianship and/or work in rural library communities.

5. WAUKESHA PUBLIC LIBRARY RECEIVES NEA BIG READ GRANT

The Waukesha Public Libraryhas been awarded a grant of $16,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to host The Big Read in Waukesha. The NEA’s Big Read is a grant program designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The program is managed by Arts Midwest. The Waukesha Public Library is one of 77nonprofit organizations to receive a grant to host a Big Read project between September 2013 and June 2014. The Big Read in Waukesha will focus on“Into the Beautiful North”by Luis Alberto Urrea. Activities will takeplace September 27 through November 3, 2013.

The Big Read provides communities nationwide with the opportunity to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 31 selections from U.S. and world literature. The 77 selected organizations will receive Big Read grants topromote and carry out community-based reading programs featuring activities such as read-a-thons, book discussions, lectures, movie screenings, and performing arts events. Participating communities also receivehigh-quality, free-of-charge educational materials to supplement each title, including Reader’s, Teacher’s, and Audio Guides, which also are available for download onhttp://neabigread.org/ .
