1. COMMON SCHOOL FUND PAYMENTS ANNOUNCED

Public school districts throughout the state will share $30.1 million in library aid paid April 29 from the Common School Fund (CSF), the only state funding specifically designated for the purchase of materials for school libraries. Aid is based on the number of children between the ages of 4 and 20 living in each school district. This year’s school library aid payment was $24.71 per child for 1,218,203 children counted in the 2011-12 school census. Funding is down by $2.4 million from last year. The census total was down by 6,486 children as well. Districts must use Common School Fund library aid by June 30 for the purchase of books, media materials, or computer equipment that is housed in the school library. (A description of the fund and eligible purchases can be found online at http://imt.dpi.wi.gov/imt_csf_expl.)

The list of amounts received for each district and additional information is available on the Department of Public Instruction newsroom website http://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/eis/pdf/dpinr2013_51.pdf.

Please remember that payments to the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands (BCPL) Loan Program help build the Common School Fund: http://bcpl.wisconsin.gov/section.asp?linkid=1438&locid=145. Schools and libraries are eligible for these loans, the interest for which goes back to the CSF. The projects can include a wide variety of topics including upgrading network infrastructures within your facilities. The loan program creates a win-win opportunity for schools and libraries.

4. SUMMER LIBRARY TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE WINNER SELECTED

“What Are You Doing?” is the winner of the inaugural 2013 Wisconsin Teen Video Challenge. The video was submitted by Tedd Piper, who created it with Cole Anderson and Caleb Kamrath through the L. E. Phillips Memorial Library in Eau Claire. Teens were asked to create a video promoting summer reading at the public library, based on their interpretation of the 2013 Collaborative Summer Library Program teen slogan “Beneath the Surface. ” Videos were evaluated for creativity, clarity, inspiration, and impact by board members of the Youth Services Section, a division of the Wisconsin Library Association. The winners will receive $275 and a $125 award for their local library. In addition, their entry will represent Wisconsin in the national contest. The Summer Library Program is coordinated by the Public Library Development Team of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and is funded in part with a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which administers the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
