1. WISCONSIN YOUTH SERVICES SHOWCASE CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY

The Wisconsin Youth Services Showcase is one year old! Take a look at the April 2013 edition features:

  • Eye-catching displays at the Withee Public Library (Submitted by Janice Arndt)
  • Pretty pinch pots at Horicon Public Library’s make-and-take art program (Submitted by Sarah Cournoyer)
  • School and public library collaboration benefiting middle and high school students at the L. E. Phillips Memorial Library in Eau Claire (Submitted by Dayna Lovell)
  • The Harlem Shake makes it to Green Bay (Submitted by Jamie Matczak)
  • Dr. Seuss’ birthday party at the Matheson Memorial Library in Elkhorn (Submitted by Jennifer Wharton)

2. BADGERLINK MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 7 AND 8

BadgerLink’s authentication and federated search provider, Auto-Graphics, will be performing server maintenance from Sunday (4/7) at 5 p.m. to  Monday (4/8) at 4 a.m., which will result in some sporadic down time for BadgerLink resources. The down time, when it occurs, will last one to two hours.

3. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS LITERACY AWARDS PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

The Librarian of Congress has named a group of distinguished men and women in the field of literacy to serve on the Advisory Board for the new Library of Congress Literacy Awards. Laura Bush, Lynda Johnson Robb and Caroline Kennedy are among the members.

These awards will be conferred for the first time in October 2013 to recognize and support outstanding achievements in the field of literacy, both in the United States and abroad. The awards are made possible through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein.

The application rules and a downloadable application form are at http://www.read.gov/literacyawards. Applications must be received no later than midnight on April 15, 2013.

Three prizes will be awarded annually:
  • The David M. Rubenstein Prize ($150,000), for a groundbreaking or sustained record of advancement of literacy by any individual or entity worldwide
  • The American Prize ($50,000), for a project developed and implemented successfully during the past decade for combating illiteracy and/or aliteracy
  • The International Prize ($50,000), for the work of an individual, nation, or nongovernmental organization working in a specific country or region

Laura Bush, founder of the Texas Book Festival in 1995 and co-founder (with Librarian of Congress James H. Billington) of the Library of Congress National Book Festival in 2001, is the honorary chair of the Advisory Board. Mrs. Bush is a librarian as well as a literacy and reading advocate who focused much of her attention on education while she was first lady.

NAUPA: Locate Unclaimed Money -- http://www.unclaimed.org -- Official website for the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), a non-profit organization affiliated with the National Association of State Treasurers and the Council of State Governments. Visitors to the site can search for and claim forgotten money that may be due from official government agencies.
