1. DPI BUDGET REQUESTS FUNDING FOR LIBRARY SERVICES
An elementary student uses the web to explore an encyclopedia, a high school student gets start to finish lessons on conducting research projects, and business owners and hobbyists find targeted information from more than 20,000 full text magazines, journals, newspapers, and reference materials through Wisconsin's online library called BadgerLink. "If purchased individually," said State Superintendent Tony Evers, "Wisconsin's libraries, schools, universities, and other organizations would spend as much as $75 million to provide this service."
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is requesting state budget funding for library services, including BadgerLink; specialized services for the blind, children's librarians, and teachers; work to ensure that major collections and unique materials are available to all parts of the state; and aid for regional public library systems.
More information is available in the news release, which can be found at dpi.wi.gov/news/releases .
2. PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT
The LibPAS online reporting system for the 2012 Public Library Annual Report is scheduled to be ready for access on January 16. Email announcements with login information will be sent to directors of all public libraries throughout Wisconsin. Instructions and information about the 2012 Public Library Annual Report (along with a link to the reporting site) are available here: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_annrpt.
This year, in an effort to reduce errors and further streamline the process for libraries, a number of systems are supplying the Department of Public Instruction with data that will be uploaded and pre-filled on behalf of their member libraries. That data may include collection and usage numbers derived from regional shared catalogs and circulation systems, or financial information for grants or reimbursements distributed by the regional system. The following systems have supplied or are preparing data for upload next week: Eastern Shores, Indianhead, Lakeshores, Manitowoc-Calumet, Mid-Wisconsin, Milwaukee County, OWLS, Nicolet, Northern Waters, South Central, Southwest, Waukesha County, Winding Rivers, Winnefox, and Wisconsin Valley.

4. LSTA ADVISORY COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
Several members of the LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) Advisory Committee have completed their terms on the committee as of the end of 2012 and suggestions for new members to serve on the committee are sought. The LSTA Advisory Committee advises the State Superintendent of Public Instruction on matters pertaining to the administration of the LSTA program. Membership on the committee includes representatives from libraries and library systems of various types and sizes and from different geographic areas of the state. Members of the committee are appointed to serve staggered three-year terms and the committee usually meets twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. The nomination form can be obtained by visiting the LSTA Advisory Committee (http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_lstaadvcom) website. Please contact Terrie Howe, LSTA Program Coordinator, at teresa.howe@dpi.wi.gov or (608) 266-2413 if you have any questions.
5. TRUSTEE ESSENTIALS UPDATE
"Trustee Essentials: a Handbook for Wisconsin Public Library Trustees" has been refreshed and updated for the new DPI Drupal-based website and is now available at: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_handbook
The handbook includes 27 "Trustee Essentials," along with additional trustee reference tools. Each Trustee Essential covers the basics of an important issue to library board members, and also points to sources of additional information. Trustee Essentials have a uniform format designed for use as a reference, as well as for trustee orientation and short continuing education sessions. Most of the Trustee Essentials include discussion questions that can be used during small group continuing education programs, which could be held as part of a library board meeting.
A number of the Trustee Essentials include sample documents that can be adapted for local use. Sample documents include: board bylaws; a director job description; a director evaluation form; a material complaint/challenge form; and an orientation outline for new trustees. The samples are all linked to Word document files.
Trustee Essentials will be maintained online. Each section is available as an individual PDF document, or the entire document can be downloaded from a single link to a PDF document using Adobe Reader or other PDF utilities. The Division for Libraries and Technology (DLT) originally developed the handbook with the assistance of the Wisconsin Public Library Trustee Handbook Revision Task Force. Library board members and directors should refer to the online version, which can be easily updated to reflect future changes in library law.
6. COLLABORATION BEGINS WITH AWARENESS - LIBRARIES SUPPORT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
For Wisconsin public libraries, it is essential to understand two recent initiatives influencing local public school districts. Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are statewide developments that affect public libraries, specifically early literacy programs and youth services collection development. For information and resources concerning PALS and CCSS, see the new Public Library Development webpage Public School Initiatives Affecting Wisconsin Public Libraries (http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_ps-initiatives). For other relevant resources, see the Youth and Special Services webpage (http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_ys-sn).
7. TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE FOR WISCONSIN PUBLIC LIBRARIES
2013 is the first year Wisconsin will participate in the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Teen Video Challenge. Information about the contest, including promotional resources and video creation resources, can be found at: http://cslpreads.org/challenge-overview.html
For the contest, teens should create a video promoting Summer Reading at the public library, including an interpretation of the 2013 CSLP teen slogan "Beneath the Surface," to win $275 and a $125 award for the library. Any teen, aged 13 -18, can enter the CSLP 2013 Teen Video Challenge in the state where they reside. Videos can be created individually or as a team. Each participating CSLP member state will select one winner.
The deadline is Friday, February 1, 2013. The state winner will be selected by March 1, 2013. The national winners will be selected in April 2013.

Fresh Practices for Youth Services Librarians
Wednesday, March 6, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
Your youth services might be a well-oiled machine of systematic displays and storytimes, but how often do you really look at WHY you do what you do? Sometime you need to reinvent the wheel and break the mold. Hear from three youth services experts in the state on ways think of yourself as an educator (versus entertainer), literacy enthusiast (versus craft expert), and life changer (versus summer library soldier).
The first webinar of the series, Summer Library Programming with BadgerLink, was held on Tuesday, January 8 and is archived in case you missed it. Go "underground" with BadgerLink and TeachingBooks and get ideas for the 2013 Summer Library Program including science experiments, activities, and other novel resources.
No need to register-just click the link on the scheduled meeting day and time. Sign in with your first name/library name. Webinars will be recorded and archived for later viewing.
