1. BADGERLINK'S EBSCO MOBILE UPDATE

Using mobile detection technology, EBSCOhost now recognizes whether or not users are connecting from a mobile device, and automatically sends them to the appropriate version of the interface. Therefore the BadgerLink team recommends removing the link you may have on your website to the EBSCOhost Mobile profile, which was introduced in 2009.

Users will have seamless access to the mobile version of EBSCOhost by going to the BadgerLink Homepage and clicking on Database List, as well as through any direct links to the EBSCOhost databases.

If you have questions about BadgerLink, please complete the BadgerLink Technical Support Request Form: http://165.189.80.100/rll/bl_sup.asp.

2. SPARKS! IGNITION GRANTS FOR LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting applications for the
Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries and Museums grant program. These grants are a special funding opportunity within the IMLS National Leadership Grants program to encourage libraries, museums, and archives to test and evaluate specific innovations in the ways they operate and the services they provide. Sparks Grants support the deployment, testing, and evaluation of promising and groundbreaking new tools, products, services, or organizational practices. Applicants may propose activities or approaches that involve risk, as long as the risk is balanced by significant potential for improvement in the ways libraries and museums serve their communities. Grant amounts range from $10,000 to $25,000, with grant period running up to one year. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2013.

Successful proposals will address problems, challenges, or needs of broad relevance to libraries, museums, and/or archives. A proposed project should test a specific, innovative response to the identified problem and present a plan to make the findings widely and openly accessible.

3. ALA RELEASES E-BOOK MEDIA TOOLKIT

To assist libraries in informing the public about e-book lending practices, the American Library Association (ALA) recently released the "ALA E-book Media & Communications Toolkit," a set of materials that will support librarians in taking action in their communities.

Developed by the ALA's Digital Content and Libraries Working Group (DCWG), the toolkit includes op-ed and press release templates for library supporters interested in informing the public of the role that libraries play in building literate and knowledgeable communities. Additionally, the toolkit provides guidance on ways to use the media templates, as well as ALA talking points, e-book data, and public service announcement scripts.

The Digital Content & Libraries Working Group, a representative group made up of 27 ALA members from various types of libraries, advises the Association on issues related to libraries and digital content, and the provision of equitable access to digital content for all. The group has developed a number of other resources about e-books, including the report "Ebook Business Models for Public Libraries," and maintains the E-Content blog for new developments from the DCWG and commentary about e-content.

To view the communications toolkit, visit www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/ebooktoolkit. Questions about the media toolkit should be sent to Jazzy Wright, press officer of the ALA Washington Office, at jwright@alawash.org.

4. ALA TO HOST WEBINAR ON DIGITAL LITERACY AND LIBRARIES

To facilitate a national dialogue on digital literacy education, the American Library Association (ALA) will host the free webinar "Assessing Digital Literacy: Outcomes and Impact" on December 11, 2012, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. CST. The December forum, which will be hosted by the ALA Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) and the ALA Digital Literacy Task Force, is a follow-up to the previous web-based forum that the ALA hosted in November.

In this national conversation, which will be moderated by OITP Fellow Dr. Renee Hobbs, attendees will hear from participants who are exploring ways to measure the effectiveness of digital literacy programs. Topics will include:

  • How do we motivate and support library staff in staying current?
  • What are the perceived obstacles that interfere with the continuing education process?
  • What resources or continuous learning models already are available to the profession, and what are their pros/cons?

To RSVP for the webinar (which will be streamed live at http://www.districtdispatch.org/digilit12/), email OITP Assistant Director Marijke Visser at alawash@alawash.org, using "Digital Literacy" in the subject line.
