1. CERTIFIED EQUALIZED VALUES FOR CALCULATION OF COUNTY LIBRARY TAX EXEMPTION

As a follow-up to the August 9 Channel Weekly article, "Instructions for calculating exemption from county library tax," the certified equalized values have been posted by the Department of Revenue at http://www.dor.state.wi.us/report/e.html#equal. These figures should be used by municipalities to calculate the threshold for exemption from the county library tax.

The Public Library Development Team offers step-by-step instructions on calculating the exemption here: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/pdf/2013CountyExempCalc.pdf

Not all municipalities with public libraries are eligible for this exemption, but those that have exempted in the past may wish to calculate the amount in order to qualify before finalizing their library appropriation.

2. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE UPDATES WISCONSIN PUBLIC RECORDS OUTLINE

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen recently announced the newly revised Wisconsin Public Records Compliance Outline available at the Department of Justice website. The new form addresses the permissible fees for responding to public records requests.

Additionally, the public, media representatives and government officials are invited to register to attend free, upcoming DOJ seminars on the public records and open meetings laws with assistant attorneys general. The live programs will be held October 4, 2012, in Waukesha and October 15 in Fitchburg. A live webinar is scheduled for October 17. A webinar is an interactive audio-visual presentation viewed live over the Internet from the participant's personal computer. Online registration for all events is open at the following shortened link: http://goo.gl/3H8lB

4. SCHOOL LIBRARIANS HELP DISTRICTS ADDRESS COMMON CORE

The following Education Week article reports how school media specialists serve in a unique and valuable hybrid role--as co-instructors alongside classroom teachers, as well as professional-development providers for teachers. Here in Wisconsin, as we collaborate around the Common Core State Standards implementation, librarians are critical to support the effort, both in schools, as well as in the community, where parents and communities adapt to new learning technologies. They are also critical to the leveraging of digital tools as instructional content changes in its delivery.
