1. SLIDESHOW: 60 WAYS TO USE YOUR LIBRARY CARD

September is Library Card Sign-up Month (http://www.ala.org/conferencesevents/celebrationweeks/card). The American Library Association (ALA) is making available a slideshow featuring "60 Ways to Use Your Library Card." Libraries can embed a slideshow that scrolls through examples like "Learn how to write a business plan" and "Get help with homework" on their own websites or blogs. Additional tools to kick off the month include new Facebook cover photos that libraries can download for use on their own Facebook pages. ALA's press release, with additional information, is available at http://tinyurl.com/blvp2gf.

2. 50-STATE SALUTE TO BANNED BOOKS WEEK

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week (September 30-October 6,2012) the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) is coordinating a "50-State Salute to Banned Books Week" to consist of videos from ALA chapters (and other libraries, library-related organizations, and bookstores, even those outside the US) proclaiming the importance of the freedom to read. 29 states and the District of Columbia have signed on to participate so far. The deadline to submit a video is September 28 (http://www.ala.org/advocacy/submitting-video-50-state-salute). Only organizations (not individuals) may participate in the 50-state event. If you are interested individually in participating in Banned Books Week, but don't know how? Consider joining many libraries in the Banned Books Virtual Read-Out! (http://tinyurl.com/ct2yd9n).

Additional information on the Salute and Read-Out is available at http://www.ala.org/advocacy/banned/bannedbooksweek/calendarofevents/50statesalute.

3. SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL DOT DAY

On September 15, 2012, more than a quarter of a million children, teachers, and librarians in all 50 states and on six continents will collaborate, create, and connect as they celebrate creativity in the classroom and honor Boston-area author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds' classic "storybook for all ages" The Dot.

"International Dot Day is a powerful way to begin the school year," says International Dot Day founder Terry Shay. Shay has been teaching children in grades 4-12 for more than twenty-three years. "Dot Day celebrations can be 30 minute classroom activities, weeklong school-wide celebrations, or a school district theme for an entire year. Igniting a spark of courage and inspiration is what is important."

"It is amazing to see that so many people around the world are finding inspiration to transform teaching and learning through creativity," said Reynolds. "I hope Dot Day will help to remind people that creativity and arts aren't educational 'extras' - they are essential to the creative, inventive problem-solving the world needs today."
