1. NEW CONTENT MANAGEMENT LIBRARIAN AT RL&LL

Elizabeth Neuman has joined the Department of Public Instruction's Division for Libraries and Technology as the Content Management Librarian at Resources for Libraries and Lifelong Learning (RL&LL). As the Content Management Librarian, Elizabeth is responsible for the development, maintenance, and outreach of RL&LL's digital collections, reference, and resource sharing tools. She will also lead the project team for Found in Wisconsin, a searchable database that allows you to find digital objects created and hosted by Wisconsin libraries, museums, and historical societies.

Elizabeth will also provide support for the BadgerLink program, assisting the BadgerLink Coordinator by providing additional technical support and problem resolution. BadgerLink is a statewide program that provides full-text information and multi-media from magazines, newspapers, reference materials, primary documents, as well as information on health, business, auto repair, children and adult literature. The Content Management Librarian works with users to ensure accessibility and usability of the BadgerLink resources.

Elizabeth is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she earned a Master of Library and Information Science with a concentration in Information Organization. Elizabeth has worked at the Milwaukee Public Library and Milwaukee Art Museum on digital projects including digitization, research, metadata creation and maintenance. Elizabeth's first day with DPI was Monday, July 16.

2. WI BROADBAND: BRINGING BROADBAND EDUCATION TO MARATHON COUNTY

The recent UW-Extension's Building Community Capacity through Broadband (BCCB) project featured an article about the impact of the project in Marathon County. The following is excerpted from an article in the BCCB online newsletter, written by Amy Ryan, a Library Assistant at Marathon County Public Library:

When Mike Theiss was hired in January as the broadband coordinator and educator for UW Extension Marathon County's BCCB project, he knew he had a big task ahead of him, especially trying to reach the far corners of the county - the largest in the state. "It was overwhelming to try to come up with a process that would increase digital literacy in Marathon County in less than a year," Theiss said. "There are more than 40 townships in the county and that covers a lot of people."

Fortunately, Theiss knew where he could go for help: the area libraries. "Librarians know their audience. If you want to reach people, ask a librarian," Theiss said. "There are nine libraries in the Marathon County Public Library system, meaning a large number of people in the smaller townships would see notices for the class and be able to attend events that are closer to their homes."

Theiss worked with the Marathon County Public Library staff, both at the Wausau headquarters and the eight branch libraries, to hold basic computer and social networking classes. The library staff advertised the classes by contacting the local media, putting announcements on the library website, putting announcements in church bulletins and placing posters around the communities. Between January and June 2012, Theiss held more than 107 classes at Marathon County Public Library locations and served more than 477 people.

The full article and other information about the grant appears in the BCCB e-newsletter here http://goo.gl/W5WVy (shortened link).
