2. IMLS AWARDS $50,000 TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION TO DEVELOP SUMMER READING APP
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced a planning grant of $50,000 to the Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association. This National Leadership Grant will aid in the development of a "summer reading app" for mobile devices by the summer of 2013.
"Research shows that lack of opportunities for summer learning can put children and teens at risk of falling behind. Some students enter middle school far behind their peers with little hope of catching up," said IMLS Director Susan Hildreth. "We want this project to create new and innovative ways to keep kids engaged in learning."

The app, which highlights books and media from YALSA's awards and selected book and media lists, can be run on an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad. 5. REINVENTING THE RURAL LIBRARY
Melinda Tanner, District Consultant Librarian for the public libraries in Washington, Greene, and Fayette Counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania, compares libraries to McDonald's in a recent column for the Rural and Tribal Library Leadership Series from the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS). In the column, Tanner also writes, "As funding has decreased and the number of unique community agencies has dwindled, the role of the public libraries has changed. We are filling the service voids within our communities. Libraries have a history and reputation for doing more in times of less. These past few years have been no exception. Small and rural libraries are demonstrating their value by doing whatever it takes by being flexible to meet the needs within their community. Libraries are doing things they may not have ever imagined they would." Read the complete column at http://olos.ala.org/columns/.
