1. WALTER BURKHALTER JOINS DPI'S LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT TEAM
The Department of Public Instruction's Division for Libraries and Technology is very pleased to announce that Walter Burkhalter will join the Public Library Development team as the Public Library Administration Consultant.
Walter brings to the team over 20 years of library administration experience in four states, including library system administration in the Southwest Wisconsin Library System, the Shawnee Library System in southern Illinois, and the Mid-Wisconsin Federated Library System, where he has served as system director for the past ten years.
In addition to his work for library systems in Wisconsin, Walter was also director of the Franklin Public Library. He has served both as president of the Wisconsin Library Association and chair of the Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries, and twice served on the Division's LSTA Advisory Committee. Walter earned his Masters of Library and Information Studies at the UW-Madison, and his bachelor's at Virginia Tech.
Walter will assume his new duties at DPI on June 25, 2012, joining consultants Terrie Howe and Tessa Schmidt, and team director John DeBacher.
2. 2012 WISCONSIN PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTORY AVAILABLE
A draft of the 2012 Wisconsin Public Library Directory is now available in PDF and Excel formats on the Public Library Development site here: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_wipldir, based on data compiled in the 2011 Public Library Annual Report and other more recent updates. Library directors are asked to please review the information for you library and report any corrections to libraryreport@dpi.wi.gov
The PDF version (http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/pld/pdf/wipldir.pdf) contains a single combined "Directory of Public Libraries and Their Branches" listed by city, followed by an alphabetical name index. The document also includes system and resource library directory information.
An Excel-formatted workbook file is also available containing a spreadsheet by community of all 385 public libraries, services, and branches, as well as a spreadsheet of the state's 17 library systems. This Excel file is useful as a merge source for mailing labels or form letters.
Public library statistics covering the year 2011 will be released in separate files, as soon as editing is complete, and added to the year-by-year file sets from 1996 onward, available to view or download from links at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_dm-lib-stat.
3. NEW, MORE CONCISE PUBLIC LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT PAGE
The Web page of for the Public Library Development Team has been revised and reorganized to make it more concise and improve the presentation of included links and resources. The page is available on the DPI website here: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov.
4. 2013 LSTA INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES AVAILABLE
A draft of the 2013 LSTA Information and Guidelines publication is now available and posted on the DPI website here: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_lsta, along with a new LSTA Grant Application Worksheet (in Word format). The Guidelines present the LSTA grant categories for 2013 for library and library systems, and instructions on the application process. The Worksheet will be particularly useful to new applicants, and helps clarify the terminology and expectations in the application process.
Please check here and the website for announcement of upcoming informational webinar sessions in June, as well as any amendments, clarifications, or changes to the Guidelines.
