1. PRESIDENT OBAMA REQUESTS $231,953,777 FOR IMLS

President Barack Obama has requested $231,953,777 for fiscal year 2013 for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an amount equal to the agency's current funding. The IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums; part of its mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. This is the first budget request for the agency since the adoption of its new five-year strategic plan. (http://www.imls.gov/assets/1/AssetManager/StrategicPlan2012-16_Brochure.pdf)

"This budget helps museums and libraries level the playing field for the people of the United States," said Susan Hildreth, director of IMLS. "IMLS is the federal voice for libraries and museums. With this budget we will continue to provide leadership through grant making research and policy development. Especially in our information age, libraries and museums are not luxuries; they are fundamental to supporting a democratic society where communities and individuals thrive with broad access to lifelong learning."

The President requested $184,704,000 for the nation's 123,000 libraries. Of that amount, approximately 85 percent ($156.3 million) is distributed through the Grants to States program to the State Library Administrative Agencies in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and freely associated states, according to a population-based formula. These grants help libraries meet community needs, use technology to develop new service models and reach underserved populations.

2. COMMON CORE MATERIALS FOR ELA AND LITERACY

BadgerLink, through its license to TeachingBooks.net, has materials to help implement Common Core Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Literacy.

On TeachingBooks.net, ready-to-use instructional materials support three Common Core ELA & Literacy evidence-based pedagogical shifts. Shift 1: Balance informational and literary reading in all grades by emphasizing informational texts and the Common Core Appendix B Text Exemplars. Shift 2: Emphasize reading in many K-12 disciplines; including history, social studies, and science, with thoughtfully selected supplemental booklists. Shift 3: Require knowledge and direct consideration of the text to support students' evidentiary argument skills at all grade levels.

TeachingBooks.net can be accessed through BadgerLink for thousands of quality, vetted resources that are easy to locate by grade level: http://TeachingBooks.net/CommonCore.

4. CALL FOR PRESENTERS FOR FIRST LAKE SUPERIOR LIBRARIES SYMPOSIUM

The Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is placing a call for proposals with local librarians, teachers, IT professionals, and community members to participate in their inaugural conference to be held on Friday, June 1, 2012, at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) Conference Center.

Presenters on Leadership, Teaching & Learning, and Technology are encouraged to submit proposals. If you believe you can share a viable program, message, workflow, idea, demonstration, or other experience in a breakout/classroom format, then submit your proposal at http://goo.gl/aoDMM.

Presentations should be 45 minutes in length including Q&A. The Symposium will provide audio visual support. The Call for Proposals closes on February 24, with the presentation schedule to be released in mid-March.

The Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is a conference developed by local librarians from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Their goal is to develop and foster an enhanced network of skills, programs, and literacy types that will benefit the libraries of Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and their respective communities. The inaugural conference will be held on Friday, June 1 at WITC-Superior with an effort to keep costs for attendance to a minimum.
