1. PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION TO HOLD MEETING ON BROADBAND

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin is holding a series of open, public meetings around the state on issues related to broadband availability and high-speed Internet access. The next meeting will be Tuesday, January 31, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Days Inn, located just off I-90/94 at the Highway 78 exit (exit 108A) in Portage. Anyone interested in this issue is invited to attend. There is no charge and no advanced registration. The complete press release with more information is at http://www.link.wisconsin.gov/lwi/docs/R8%20Press%20Release%20on%20Inves...

2. DIGITAL LEARNING DAY IS FEBRUARY 1

Don't forget to mark your calendars for Digital Learning Day (http://imt.dpi.wi.gov/imt_dlday), to be held next Wednesday, February 1. There is still time for schools or education partners to plan an event related to the use of technology in education, and to share their plans on the Wisconsin (https://sites.google.com/a/dpi.wi.gov/wisconsin-digital-learning-day/) or national (http://www.digitallearningday.org/events/local-events) Digital Learning Day websites. The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association, is a sponsor for the event. State Superintendent Tony Evers and the Department of Public Instruction are leading a statewide co-operative effort to plan exciting events for the day-an occasion to share and learn from successful innovations regarding technology in education (/sites/default/files/imce/eis/pdf/dpinr2012_03.pdf). Wisconsin's observance is part of a national effort led by the Alliance for Excellent Education (http://www.digitallearningday.org/).

Activities for the day include a virtual showcase from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. featuring Superintendent Evers and Wisconsin educators. From 3:30 to 4 p.m., the State Superintendent will hold a digital town hall meeting. Everyone is encouraged to participate, asking questions or sharing insights and experiences about the most effective uses of technology in education.

3. WORK GROUP TO REVISE STATEWIDE ILL GUIDELINES ANNOUNCED

Resources for Libraries and Lifelong Learning and the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) Resource Sharing Roundtable are convening a statewide working group to revise statewide interlibrary loan guidelines. Feedback on the current guidelines was solicited through conference presentations and surveys distributed throughout the state in 2011.

The guidelines, which were last revised in 2005, will be reviewed by the working group. Suggested updates will be shared and input will be gathered from the statewide library community. The group will read and review the current Wisconsin and American Library Association guidelines and the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States Explanatory Supplement. Additions, deletions, and changes to the existing guidelines will be recommended and discussed. New language will be drafted to bring the Wisconsin guidelines up to date. The revised guidelines will be shared as online/electronic documents. The working group does not anticipate distributing a formal, printed version of the guidelines.

The group will meet four times beginning Friday, February 3, 2012, and will complete the draft revisions by April 30. It will be presented at the 2012 Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries (WAPL) conference by team members in May.

The working group includes representatives of the Wisconsin library community from around the state, including:

Linda Bailen - Northern Waters Library Service
Maureen Welch - Indianhead Federated Library System
Chris Hamburg - Two Rivers Public Library
Matt Rosendahl - Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College
Angela Milock - Wisconsin Library Services (WiLS)
Fred Marini - Melrose - Mindoro Area School District
Nell Fleming - Wisconsin School for the Deaf
Amelia Osterud - Carroll University
Brian Hanneman - Milwaukee Public Library
Bob Zabkowicz - Wisconsin Department of Corrections
