1. DPI SEEKS ADVISORY COMMITTEE NOMINEES

The Department of Public Instruction, Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning is seeking nominations for two advisory committees. If you are interested in serving on either committee or nominating someone else to serve, please contact Sally Drew at sally.drew@dpi.wi.gov or 608-224-6161 to obtain a nomination form. Please return nominations by December 20, 2010.

The Delivery Services Advisory Committee reviews issues related to the operation, expansion, and funding of the delivery of library materials to improve resource sharing among Wisconsin libraries. Members serve for a three-year term which will begin in January 2011 and will continue through the December, 2013 meeting.

The advisory committee was established in 1998 to provide the Department of Public Instruction with a single, comprehensive, and coordinated source of review and advice on the statewide delivery of library materials. The committee consists of 15 members and represents the interests of all types of libraries (public, school, academic, and special). The committee meets three times a year for from two to four hours. Meetings are normally held in January, May, and September. The January and September meetings are usually held via Webinar or telephone conference call, and the May meeting provides the opportunity for all members to meet together. The Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning will reimburse travel expenses for any meeting that requires travel, per state guidelines.

The Library Information Technology Advisory Committee provides advice and consultation on the application of technology to library programs for all types of Wisconsin libraries. The appointment is for a three-year term ending in December 2013.

LITAC was established in 2000 to assist in the development of the Wisconsin Library Technology Strategic Plan. The strategic plan reflects the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning's statutory mission to promote cooperation among all types of libraries and to coordinate the development of networks to foster resource sharing. The committee consists of 21 members and represents the interests of all types of libraries (public, school, academic, and special). The committee meets three times per year in Madison. The Department of Public Instruction will reimburse travel expenses for each meeting, per state guidelines.

2. APPLY FOR A BIG READ GRANT

The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, is accepting applications from libraries for grants ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 to conduct month-long, community-wide reads between September 2011 and June 2012. The grants much be matched at least one-to-one with nonfederal funds. Approximately 75 organizations will be selected to participate. Applicants must choose from a list of 28 book titles or three poets as their reading choices. The deadline is February 1, 2011. More information is at: http://www.neabigread.org/guidelines.php.

3. @YOUR LIBRARY JOINS MONEY SMART WEEK®

The Federal Reserve Bank partnered with the American Library Association (ALA) in 2010 to launch Money Smart Week @ Your Library nationally. Throughout the ten year history of Money Smart Week, libraries have been instrumental in facilitating and hosting quality Money Smart Week events. The partnership with the ALA, which is the first of its kind, will allow libraries across the country to participate independently or as part of existing state and regional campaigns.

Even more libraries can join Money Smart Week next spring, from April 2-9, 2011. Events will take place at libraries across the country and will and cover topics from learning how to apply for a mortgage to teaching young people about credit.
