1. BADGERLINK'S ARRC INTERFACE UPDATES COMING SOON

EBSCO has announced that later this summer, you will see significant user interface, content, and functionality updates made to the Auto Repair Reference Center (ARRC.) Some of these upgrades are listed below:
  • All repairs classified by OEMs, such as Ford, Honda, etc., on a given vehicle will be categorized and made available in the new ARRC user interface
  • Thousands of repairs (as opposed to hundreds in print repair manuals) for each vehicle will provide the most comprehensive repair coverage available to the Do-it-Yourselfer
  • Coverage will be provided for many more vehicles than Chilton, with historic repair information dating back to the 1940s
  • Content indices will make finding repair information much easier, and will include wiring diagrams, specifications, maintenance intervals, TSBs, recalls and labor guide estimates
  • A streamlined content update system will ensure currency superior to the manual methods used by other sources
  • Researchers using the new interface will have more complete access to what they need, by being able to find content from PDFs, including graphics in the repair procedures
Here are some examples of the new, intuitive screens coming in the ARRC updated interface:

This release is expected for late summer/early fall, and will require no changes on your part. The new user interface will simply replace the existing ARRC as soon as it is ready.

3. IMLS AWARDS OVER $1.4 MILLION TO SUPPORT NATIVE AMERICAN LIBRARIES

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded $1,495,000 to 218 Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages and corporations as part of the Native American Library Services Basic Grant program. With this funding, the libraries will be able to strengthen their core services for the benefit of the tribal communities and villages they serve.

Awardees may use their funds to support existing library operations; maintain core library services; and, with the Education/Assessment Option, provide their library staff with continuing education courses, training workshops, or the opportunity to present at conferences. These recipients may also hire a consultant for an on-site professional library assessment.

Wisconsin tribes receiving funding include:
  • Stockbridge Munsee Community - Bowler, WI--$7,000
  • Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians - Hayward, WI--$7,000
  • Menominee Indian Tribe - Keshena, WI--$6,000
  • Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians - Lac du Flambeau, WI--$6,000
  • Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians - Odanah, WI--$7,000
  • Oneida Nation of Wisconsin - Oneida, WI--$7,000

4. IMLS AND DEPARTMENT OF LABOR ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration held a press conference at the Washington Convention Center during the American Library Association's Annual Conference to announce a new partnership that will help job seekers access employment and training services in public libraries.

"Public libraries are working diligently in our urban, suburban and rural communities to be an essential partner in putting people back to work, helping people stay in their jobs, and giving people a step up to a better job. We are pleased to be here to announce the partnership between the Department of Labor and the Institute for Museum and Library Services," said Public Library Association President Sari Feldman, who opened the event.

Feldman added that by working together at the federal level, IMLS and the Department of Labor can help shine a spotlight on what works and encourage even greater more effective collaborations at the state and local levels.

Jane Oates, assistant secretary for the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, acknowledged the significant efforts libraries across the country make to aid job seekers.

More information on this partnership, including a Webinar to be released in July, will be posted when it is available.

5. LIBRARIES REPORT INCREASED USE OF E-GOVERNMENT, JOB RESOURCES; REDUCED OPERATING HOURS

A new report finds America's public libraries posted gains in several key areas of technology deployment. Libraries nationwide report they've seen an increase in public use of online services, particularly to support job seeking and e-government transactions, and have made some gains in adding public computers and improving Internet connections available to patrons. However, snowballing funding cuts at state and local levels are forcing thousands of libraries to literally lock away access to these resources as they reduce operating hours.

The national 2010 "Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study" provides data on job and career resources, as well as tracking a significant jump in e-government use. From unemployment benefits to state tax forms, more government information and services are moving online, often without a print alternative. Responding to growing demand from people for assistance using these new forms of government services, nearly 79 percent of libraries (up from 54 percent one year ago) provide assistance to patrons applying or accessing government services, according to the report released by the American Library Association (ALA).

"Healthy public libraries play a vital role in ensuring digital opportunity for all," said ALA President Camila Alire. "This report is a message to elected leaders as they balance budgets: today's libraries are an essential service for accessing workforce and government services. Whether you are a laid-off factory worker using a computer for the first time or a tech-savvy entrepreneur using library databases for market research, libraries connect people of all backgrounds to the resources they need." One in five libraries are partnering with other government and non-profit agencies to provide e-government services.

The economic recession has placed libraries at the forefront for today's job seekers. Eighty-eight percent of libraries provide free access to job databases and other job services, and 67 percent report library staff helped patrons complete online job applications. Libraries also provide access to civil service exam materials (75 percent) and software to help patrons create resumes and other employment materials (69 percent).

The 2010 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study also finds that:
  • 67 percent of libraries report they are the only provider of free public access to computers and the Internet in their communities;
  • Public computer and Wi-Fi use was up last year for more than 70 percent of all libraries;
  • 89 percent of libraries provide formal or informal technology training, including classes in computer skills, software use and online job-seeking;
  • 82 percent of libraries provide Wi-Fi access;
  • A majority of libraries offer Internet services ranging from subscription databases (95 percent) to online homework resources (88 percent) to ebooks (66 percent); and
  • 66 percent of libraries provide assistance to patrons completing government forms.
Conducted by the ALA and the Center for Library & Information Innovation at the University of Maryland, the study provides a "state of the library" report on the technology resources brokered by libraries and the funding that enables free public access to these resources. The study features the most current national and state data available on technology access and funding in U.S. public libraries.
The study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the ALA, can be found online at http://www.ala.org/plinternetfunding.

6. NBA STAR DWAYNE WADE NAMED HONORARY CHAIR OF LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH

This September, Marquette University All-American, Olympic gold medalist, and 2008-2009 NBA top-scoring player Dwyane Wade wants Americans to know that a library card is the "smartest card" in every wallet.

As Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-up Month, Wade has donated his time and image to the creation of a print public service announcement (PSA). The American Library Association will place the PSA in magazines during the month of September. Librarians can download the PSA at http://www.ala.org/librarycardsignup.

During Library Card Sign-up Month 2009, Wade donated $25,000 through his Wade's World Foundation to help save the struggling William Leonard Public Library in Robbins, Ill.

In these tough economic times libraries are on the forefront of providing their communities with cost-effective tools that many Americans need to succeed.

In addition to the PSA Library Card Sign-up sample, media tools are now available to remind the public of all the resources available for free with a library card. Tools include a sample press release, newsletter article, proclamation, and public service announcement.

To download free promotional materials visit http://www.ala.org/librarycardsignup.
