1. DPI OFFICES CLOSED ON JULY 2 FOR FURLOUGH DAY
As part of an effort to close the state's projected budget deficit, all state of Wisconsin agencies were required to develop plans to manage mandated employee furloughs. July 2 was selected as one of the required furlough dates, and all DPI offices including the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) will be closed.
Messages received on July 2 will be returned as soon as possible after employees return to work. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
2. SPRING 2010 ISSUE OF CHANNEL NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
The Spring 2010 issue of Channel, the newsletter of the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning, is now available on the web at http://channel.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/channel/pdf/chn4503.pdf. Among the articles in this issue of Channel are:
3. CCBC AND SCLS COLLABORATE ON "CCBC SHORTS" WEBINARS
The South Central Library System is working in collaboration with the Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) on a series of webinars on selected new children's titles called "CCBC Shorts." The first set in the series was recently completed. The series is archived on the SCLS Past Program Blog at http://scls.typepad.com/programs/ccbc/ and on the CCBC website at http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/events/ccbcshorts.asp.
The second session will begin on August 18. The webinars are free and open to all librarians, teachers, and others interested in children's literature in Wisconsin. To register or for more information go to https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/901081290.
4. GRANT USED TO ADDRESS ACCESSIBILITY ISSUES AT THORP PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Thorp Public Library was recently awarded $130,000 from a Community Development Block Grant Public Facilities (CDBG-PF) grant for the renovation of its building. This will help make the building accessible and make other improvements. The estimated cost is $425,000. $145,000 additional funding will come from the reserve fund and up to $150,000 from the city's debt service, depending on the final bids and any donations received.
The existing first floor area does not meet current community needs. Additional space is needed because programs are becoming more popular and demand for computer and Internet access is booming. The project will also address ADA requirements.
The tentative plan includes a 735 square foot addition, a 115 square foot new staircase for fire safety, the installation of a chair lift that will allow access to the lower level, and a complete remodel of most of the first level. Both bathrooms on the main floor will be remodeled which will allow enough room for people who use wheelchairs to use them and the existing water fountain will be relocated. The new bathrooms will also have diaper changing tables.
The Library Director's office and staff work space will be remodeled to provide better efficiency and more convenient storage. A new circulation desk will be installed. The children's and the adult areas will be moved. All the exterior doors in the facility with be replaced.
Construction is set to begin sometime in late spring or early summer 2010. During the time of construction, the library will relocate a minimum of services to another facility and will deliver requested items daily.
