1. EVERS GIVES KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers gave a keynote address at the Wisconsin Library Association and Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association Library Legislative Day on February 16, 2010. In his speech, Tony Evers said, in part:
This is my first opportunity to speak to this group in my role as state superintendent, and I want to make sure you know how impressed I am with the great work of our libraries. I have been able to visit several already - in La Crosse, Fond du Lac, and Marshall - for example, and I am very proud of the ways libraries have stepped up to serve our communities during the recession we are all experiencing.
I am very pleased and honored to be with you today. Your work for libraries is vitally important to everyone in Wisconsin and to the future of our state. As your state superintendent, I have made an unwavering commitment to ensure that strong schools and libraries deliver the opportunity for our children and adults to achieve success and reach their goals.
I believe that every child must graduate ready for further education and the workforce. Libraries are an important component of this goal because they advance literacy and knowledge: keys to all educational and economic achievement.
This is a time of great economic challenge for families across Wisconsin and the nation. But, I believe libraries play a key role in the recovery and renewal of our state and nation.

3. APRIL IS SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH
This April, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will observe the 25th Anniversary of School Library Month (SLM). School Library Month, is celebrated in conjunction with National Library Week (April 12-18). Every April school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in a student's educational career. The 2010 theme is "Communities thrive @ your library."
Read more about the history of School Library Month and this year's activities on the AASL Web site at http://www.ala.org/aasl/slm.
4. WEBSITE OF THE WEEK
Daylight Saving Time -- http://www.webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/index.html -- Daylight Saving Time gives us the opportunity to enjoy sunny summer evenings by moving our clocks an hour forward in the spring. Yet, the implementation of Daylight Saving Time has been fraught with controversy since Benjamin Franklin conceived of the idea. Even today, regions and countries routinely change their approaches to Daylight Saving Time. At this site you can learn about the history of daylight saving (or as some may say, daylight shifting), the standardization of time, and when regions around the globe spring ahead and fall back. Daylight Saving Time is one of several exhibits in the WebExhibits online museum (http://www.webexhibits.org/), all of which promote discovery through multidisciplinary approaches that support all learning styles. WebExhibits is a public service of the Institute for Dynamic Educational Advancement (IDEA).
