1. ARRA BROADBAND GRANT BRINGS EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES

State Superintendent Tony Evers issued a statement today on Wisconsin winning a $22.9 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act competitive grant for broadband technology. With the state's investment of $5.7 million in matching funds from the Technology Education Achievement Program, the total investment in broadband services for the state's schools and libraries will be $28.7 million.

"I want to thank President Obama, our Wisconsin congressional delegation, Governor Doyle, state staff, and public library and school stakeholders for their part in bringing this investment to our schools, libraries, and communities.

"This funding will bring fiber optic connectivity to schools and libraries in rural areas that do not have this vital Internet service, which has almost unlimited capacity to carry Web-based services and other applications. Additionally, the grant will provide high-speed Internet access to 74 school districts; eight postsecondary institutions, including two tribal colleges; and 385 public libraries; connecting them to the BadgerNet Converged Network. Bringing fiber to these sites in predominantly rural areas also will create the opportunity for affordable broadband access to residential and business customers in the entire community.

"Internet access is an essential service. In many communities, the library is the only free public access available for those seeking to improve their lives, look for work, or start a business. This grant is wonderful news for Wisconsin's schools and libraries."

Additional information about Wisconsin's application for ARRA broadband funding, including a link to the list of the schools and libraries impacted by the grant, is available at http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_arrabbfunding. The intent of this grant is to provide all public libraries on the BadgerNet Converged Network with 20Mbps for $100/month and all school districts and library systems with 100Mbps for $250/month. Bob Bocher, Public Library Technology Consultant for the DPI, was significantly involved in preparation of the grant application, along with other DPI and DOA staff.

2. HOW THE PUBLIC LIBRARY CAN SAVE YOU MONEY

The current issue of Woman's Day says: "The library has always been a place to save money. Where else can you get books, CDs and DVDs without buying them? And these days libraries offer even more-a host of activities and services that cost you nothing. As part of the annual Woman's Day/ American Library Association essay contest, we announce four winners who found big savings- and even changed their lives-at their local library." 3. BETTER WORLD BOOKS/NCFL LIBRARIES AND FAMILIES AWARD APPLICATION

Applications for the new Better World Books/NCFL Libraries and Families Award are now being accepted. Through this opportunity the National Council for Family Literacy and Better World Books will reward and enhance existing family programming and expand literacy-building practices of families in library settings. The three $10,000 grants awarded each year will connect more families to their local libraries and expand their literacy efforts in new and innovative ways.

The deadline to apply is March 3, 2010. One winner will be chosen from each of the three following categories: local Friends of the Library programs, public/academic libraries and urban libraries. The winners will also receive scholarships to NCFL's 2010 National Conference on Family Literacy that will take place April 11-13 in San Antonio, Texas. The application for the award can be found at http://www.famlit.org/BWB-award/.
