1. PRESIDENT REQUESTS $265,869,000 FOR INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES

President Obama has requested $265,869,000 for fiscal year 2011 for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The request, which was transmitted to Congress on February 1, is the same as the FY 2010 enacted levels for the Institute's programs and administration.

"We are gratified that these essential services have been recognized in President Obama's continued support of these institutions," said Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Director of IMLS.

The President requested $213,523,000 for Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) programs that support the nation's 123,000 libraries. Of that amount, approximately 80 percent ($172.5 million) is distributed through the Grants to States program to the State Library Administrative Agencies (SLAAs) in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and freely associated states, according to a population-based formula. These grants help libraries meet the community needs, use technology to develop new service models and reach underserved populations.

Library funding also supports the following programs:

* National Leadership Grants to support creation of new tools, research, models, services, practices, or alliances to shape tomorrow's libraries.

* Native American and Native Hawaiian Library Services Grants to support improved access to library services for Native Americans, Alaska Native Villages, and Native Hawaiians.

* Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grants that build the professional capacity of libraries by improving staff knowledge and skills.

The President's budget provides $2.1 million in continued support for research and policy activities, including funding for the Public Library Survey and the State Library Agency Survey.

2. AL ZIMMERMAN AWARDED CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION FROM IMLS

Al Zimmerman, retired DPI Consultant for Public Library Administration and Funding, has been awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for his years of work with the Federal State Cooperative for Public Library Statistics (FSCS) Steering Committee and State Agency Survey Steering Committee. Until recently, these groups worked with The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the U.S. Census Bureau to coordinate nationwide public library data collection, now coordinated by IMLS.

The certificate reads as follows:

"Certificate of Appreciation in honor of Al Zimmerman, State Data Coordinator, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Division for Libraries, Technology, & Community Learning, for your valued dedication, commitment and service on the FSCS Steering Committee and State Agency Survey Steering Committee, January 1993 - March 1996; March 1998 - March 2001; December 2002 -December 2004; December 2005 - December 2008," signed by Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Ph.D., Director, Institute of Museum and Library Services.

3. IMLS CALLS FOR 2010 NATIVE AMERICAN LIBRARY SERVICES ENHANCEMENT GRANTS

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting applications for the 2010 Native American Library Services Enhancement Grants program. Federally-recognized tribes and Alaska Native villages and corporations may apply for these grants to improve existing library services or implement new services, particularly as they relate to the goals of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) (http://www.imls.gov/about/20usc.shtm#subii). The application deadline is May 3, 2010.

In 2009, IMLS supported 208 tribes with the noncompetitive Native American Library Services Basic Grants and an additional 17 tribes with Enhancement Grants, for a total of $3.4 million. These tribes developed a wide array of library-related projects, from providing new services to outlying reservation communities and promoting healthy lifestyles through new programs and materials, to creating pre-literacy programs for preschool children, their parents, and caregivers. This year, IMLS hopes to serve even more tribes with this important grant program.

IMLS has scheduled a webinar to give prospective applicants an opportunity to ask IMLS staff questions pertaining to Native American Library Services Enhancement Grant applications. This webinar will take place on March 8, 2010, at 4:00 pm ET. Please visit the website at http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/nativeEnhance.shtm for more information closer to the webinar date.

Please contact Alison Freese, Senior Program Officer, at 202/653-4665 or afreese@imls.gov with questions about this grant program.

4. SEND YOUR NOMINATION FOR THE NATIONAL MEDAL FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES

Supporters of outstanding museums and libraries are encouraged to nominate these institutions for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation's highest honor for exemplary museum and library community service. The National Medal honors museums and libraries that make extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Medal winners receive a $10,000 award and are honored at a National Medal award ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

Any individual, including a museum or library employee, may nominate a museum or library in the United States and its territories for the National Medal. Public or private nonprofit museums, including zoos, art, history, science and technology, children's, and natural history museums; historic houses, nature centers, and botanical gardens; and all types of nonprofit libraries, including public, school, academic, research, and archival, are eligible to receive this honor.

The nomination deadline is February 16, 2010.
