1. DPI OFFICES CLOSED ON OCTOBER 12 FOR FURLOUGH DAY

As part of an effort to close the state's multi-billion dollar budget deficit, all state of Wisconsin agencies were required to develop plans to manage mandated employee furloughs. October 12 was selected as one of the required furlough dates, and all DPI offices including the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) will be closed.

Messages received on October 12 will be returned as soon as possible after employees return to work. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Patti Sinclair, who edits the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) manual, will share highlights from the manuals. In addition, librarians will share their best craft, programming, and decorating ideas. This Pre-Conference is being co-sponsored by YSS, DLTCL, and the following contributing library systems: Arrowhead, Eastern Shores, Lakeshores, Manitowoc-Calumet, Mid-Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Nicolet, Outagamie, South Central, Waukesha, Winnefox, Winding Rivers, and Wisconsin Valley.

5. TEEN READ WEEK IS OCTOBER 18-24, 2009

Teen Read Week 2009 will be celebrated October 18-24. This year's theme is "Read Beyond Reality @ your library," which encourages teens to read something out of this world, just for the fun of it.

Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! Teens have so many options for entertainment, it's important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it's free, fun, and can be done anywhere! Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce.
